A Generator for RF and Waveform signals
1. The principle
The RF-signal is originally produced in one of 5 VCOs that have overlapping frequency ranges. The software decides which VCO to use, depending on the frequency that is set by the user. The selected VCO is phase-locked via a programmalbe PLL in order to generate the wanted frequency.
2. The way to very fine frequency steps - the tunable reference
The 10MHz reference frequency for the PLL is produced by a software-DDS system running on an extra mircoproecessor. This enables a 100Hz step width for the full range of 800MHz to 2500MHz. Click here for details.
3. The frequency ranges of the VCOs
The VCOs were developed especially for this generator. As can been seen in the chart below, the frequency ranges are overlapping, so that every frequency from 800MHz to 2.5GHz can be generated.
